A look at the future of publishing from Podcamp HFX

Sunday, about 200 people and I descended on the Alderney Public Library and Theatre for the 2nd Annual Podcamp HFX.

It was a day of discussion on everything to do with social media. From the latest stats (the average Facebook user is now 53!) and talks on usability. The big highlight of the day however was the amazing keynote from Mclean Greaves.

He gave us a sneak peak at the new 'iPad' due to be released this Wednesday. I had recently written a column for the local paper on the subject, speculating that the device might do for the publishing industry what the iPod did for the music industry.

To give you an idea what publishing might look like, starting this week, take a look at this video for Sports Illustrated.

It was a great event, Jeff, and thanks for the usability shout out. Love the iPad sample video - did you have the other link he showed on this? It was way cool, too.

The SI video really gets people (including me) excited -- but -- the more I think about it, all of the features they show could be accomplished for a few years now using web browsers. Perhaps local files would be required to get the performance as depicted, but the point is there's nothing new here except a really great producer with a great idea, and great content. The exact same experience without the touch interface can be accomplished on a computer with a mouse.

I'm still blown away by this concept from SI though. Maybe the touch interface was the inspiration that spawned such a slick content app. The bar has been raised by this idea, even if it could have been raised 2 years ago.

I agree Aaron, nothing new, just perhaps a catalyst to get publishers onboard and abandon traditional print mediums.

flypmedia.com has in fact been doing this sort of experience online, so I am sure they will be ready to launch on the iTunes store after today!
